Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry, working in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses are sold at no profit and our families pay no interest. As our partner families pay off their mortgage, that money becomes available to build more houses for more deserving families.

Habitat International FAQ

Lots of people and organizations deserve great thanks. We couldn't do it without all your dedicated help!

A Thank You:

To the Job Corps kids who have worked and are still working hard on the tile floors and some shower areas of our houses. It adds so much class and we really do appreciate the help. Above, left to right, are Enlittle Villarreal, Alex Rodriquez, Ruben Ortiz, Eric Walker, and Jim Rafferty, their Instructor. And thanks to Jessica Dalton who refused to be photographed, but helped us get all the names here!

A Thank You:

To Peggy Fowler and some of her crew doing extra hours on the Halie Home. Left to right: Marty Zona, Peggy Fowler, AnnMorris, Phyllis Zona. Great work guy/gals!

Goes to the kids who helped out at our garage sale at Marie Hegemans' house, May 7, 2005.

Just look at all those energetic and happy faces! Earlier we asked if anyone could help us with names.

Erica Schaefer, the president of the Hartwick Newman Club responded. She (along with our friends from the SUNY Oneonta Newman Club) are in the picture.
From left to right are: Camy Khan, Diana Strenka, Rebecca Jones, Erica Schaefer, Mike Chera, Sarah Hasemeier, and Mike Liens.

May 21 Work Day

Saturday, May 21, 2005
We came, we saw(ed), we conquered (or something like that!).
Up at the top of Ford Avenue in Oneonta.

A well-deserved lunch break.
Fifteen people came and most stayed from 8:30 until 2:30 when the rain began. We made some new friends, got some good construction instruction, had some laughs, some lunch, and good accomplishments.

Where there was concrete wall, there is insulation, where there was nothing but air, there is a wall. It goes up, and we workers, skilled and unskilled, old and young, male and female, long-time volunteers, and brand new volunteers – all had a hand in it.

Mr. Tesfay Haile and three of his sons, Fray, Peter and Sammy, (partnering to build their own house) were there. Three first-time women, Maureen Bruni, Karen Voltz, and Jennifer Oates were there. Dave and Ann Steen came and brought lunch fixings – yeaaa!
Dennis Murray, who patiently and gently supervised, Ruby Kreck, Ed Travis, and Bill Triolo are some of the regulars who have done this for a long time. They were there.

Now, we’re inviting you to join us. Learn some construction skills to use in your own home. Meet some fascinating and fun people. Do something for your fellow citizens. It’s as easy as stopping by – preferably with some work gloves, maybe a hammer, but even that’s not essential.

We’re hoping to build four – yes FOUR – houses in Oneonta this summer. This is a big increase for us.

And for this, we need many more volunteers than we have so far. If you join us, I can guarantee, you’ll benefit as much as the families we’re helping. It’s a win-win situation!
We work every Thursday and Saturday 8:30 to 3:30. The phone message and web site will let you know where we’re working and the progress.

Come see for yourself!

HFHOC in the News!
We have been fortunate to have the RV Care-A-Vanners with us for two weeks last summer. They made enormous progress on the Deselets home in Middlefield Center. Read about it in the Daily Star.

Three of our dedicated volunteers, Emery Herman, Jim Pasternak and Bill Triolo worked on the 2003 Jimmy Carter Work Project in LaGrange, GA. Read the Daily Star Story

The CARAVANERS were HERE!

HORRAY!!!
On September 18, President Tom Morris greeted a group of CARAVANERS who came to help us build for two full weeks! Theyl lived at the Morris Fairgrounds, and worked mostly on our houses on Morse Street.

In yellow T-shirts - Jan and Frank Woythal, leaders of this CAV. They were here in June 2004 too, and said ours was "their best building experience in the Northeast." Horray + Woo-hoo!

More CAVers along with HFHOCers Norm Tiffany (below), Nick Tarantelli, his wife Suzanne Zeien, Mary Ann Dowdell, and five-and-a-half month old granddaughter Maleah, our newest volunteer!
