News from our Construction Committee:

Greetings:
      To inform everyone of the construction progress made last week at our building sites.
      Directions to the North 7th Street and Monroe Avenue sites in Oneonta and to the Habitat Pole Barn in Hartwick are given at the bottom of this email.
      Please note that the scheduled work hours for volunteers on Thursday and Saturday are 8:30AM to 4:00PM. Also, if you plan to volunteer for work, please sign up with the "Volunteer Now!" button here on our website so that we know in advance how many volunteers to expect. If you sign up and then can't make it, please cancel on the website.
      Also note that volunteers must personally sign-in at the work site each day in order to be covered by our insurance.

Last week we had a very nice turnout of volunteers: 21 on Thursday and 15 on Saturday.

2 North 7th Street: The fan/light assembly was hung in the living room and the light fixtures in the dining area, stairwell, and above the kitchen sink were also installed. The ventilation fan/light assembly was completed in the bathroom. The digital thermostat was wired in place of the temporary analog one. Smoke and smoke/carbon monoxide detectors were wired throughout the house. The basement stairs were given several coats of polyurethane varnish; the wood top on the kitchen half wall was stained to match the kitchen cabinets. Treated wood backer boards were attached to the house under each exterior door. Interior door knobs and striker plates were installed throughout the house. Rugs were ordered for the bedrooms and living room.

At 2 North 7th Street next week: The stove, dishwasher, refrigerator and toilet may be installed. Shutters may be installed.

4 North 7th Street: Some additional wiring was done in the house. All plumbing drain lines, with the exception of the bathroom, were installed. The radon vent line was plumbed to the outside of the house. The outside hose bib was installed. Treated wood backer boards were attached to the house under each exterior door.

At 4 North 7th Street next week: Rough electrical work will be continued, as will plumbing drain and vent lines.

8 Monroe Avenue: The large storage trailer was relocated to the Monroe Avenue site. Framing of the footers for the house was completed and the footers were poured by Oneonta Job Corps (OJC).

At 8 Monroe Avenue next week: The forms will be stripped and the foundation wall forms will be erected by OJC.

Other Habitat Happenings: Our Monthly Board meeting is 7:00 pm at the Elm Park Methodist Church this Tuesday evening, May 6. We will be hosting another Care-A-Vanner group the first two weeks of June.

Most volunteer work is currently concentrated at the North 7th Street sites in Oneonta. Volunteers should come to the upper house to sign in and get assignments for the day.

Directions to the North 7th Street Sites (Oneonta)
From the center of Oneonta go east on Main Street (Route 7) until you see the Taylor gas station on your right. Immediately on your left at the corner of North 7th Street and Main is the site at 2 North 7th Street. Behind it, up the hill, is the site at 4 North 7th Street. Parking for volunteers is on the left just after you pass the building site, on the North side of Main Street in the parking lot across from the Dentist's office. Park at the extreme East end of the lot, to the right of the dumpster.

Directions to the Monroe Avenue Site (Oneonta)
From Main Street in Oneonta go North on Ford Avenue for 5 blocks. Turn left on Monroe Avenue (last left turn before Ford Avenue ends). Go one long block to Central Avenue - build site is on the left, one house after Central Avenue.

Directions to the Pole Barn (Hartwick)
From Oneonta, take Route 205 north to the village of Hartwick (about 15 miles north of Oneonta). Turn left (West) at the 4 corners onto County Route 11. Follow this about a half mile, to where the road takes a bend to the left and Weeks Road goes sharply to the right. At that bend, directly ahead of you is a large white house, driveway on the left, and pole barn in the back. Take the driveway up to the pole barn.

Directions to the HFHOC office on Dietz Street (Oneonta)
In Oneonta, take Dietz Street North from Main Street and turn right into the large municipal parking lot between Dietz Street and Ford Avenue. Park at the North end of the lot close to the office complex at 50 Dietz Street. The HFHOC office is located in Suite M.

Remember, our regular work days are Thursdays and Saturdays, starting promptly at 8:30 am, and working until 4:00pm.

All your worldly goods:
We urgently need refreshments for our laborers. Lunches, morning snacks, and cases of bottled water, juice, iced tea, lemonade, and sports beverages would be terrific.
We could really use a foldable plastic picnic table, to replace the extremely heavy wooden table that we currently schlep to and from our worksites.
And, for our public relations and speaking engagements, we would really love a “Show Style” brand display briefcase. It’s sort of like a tri-fold poster board, but very sturdy, durable, and portable.

A gift of LAND – we need building lots all around Otsego County. Donations are great, but if you have some land you’d like to sell, we may buy it if the location and price are right.

We need people to volunteer behind the scenes on our family, fundraising, public relations, and volunteer committees. And people for our Board of Directors. For a relatively small donation of your time, you will receive a world of fun and friendship in return.
We would like a person who has the experience and contacts to promote us to local and county governments.
We would also like a person with photo/video experience who could develop a promotional video!
And if you have specific building skills to bring to the site
(and maybe a desire to teach or lead a small crew) – wow!
